Jo-Anne Reske Kirkman received her MFA from the University of Minnesota in painting with an interest in medieval art history, and spent her career as a painter and K-12 and collegiate art educator. After teaching pottery to students for many years, Kirkman has recently begun pursuing a body of work in ceramics—studying and creating at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts. In her artwork motivated by political and social awareness, Kirkman explores how belief systems co-exist with cultural norms through her work in various media, and symbolically uses historical imagery to express ideas about current world issues. During the MN NICE program, Kirkman will refine her approach to handbuilt sculpture to ultimately combine her ceramic work with her painterly vision of representing historical concepts in a modern context.
