Gathering in Clay: A Community Obon Project with Juliane Shibata

Join ceramic artist Juliane Shibata for an inside look at the collaborative artwork created during her recent workshops with the Japanese American Society of Minnesota (JASM) and Northern Clay Center. Shibata will share the story behind the project, from its collaborative beginnings to its debut as a public installation in the Ordway Gardens at Como Park Zoo & Conservatory during JASM’s 2026 Obon Festival on Sunday, Aug. 16th. Attendees will learn how a wide range of styles and perspectives came together into a single work celebrating community connection. 

This project is supported by Forecast Public Art through funding from The McKnight Foundation.

Juliane Shibata is a fiscal year 2026 recipient of a Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
