JANUARY 18 – MARCH 2, 2014
Main Gallery
Three Jerome Artists featured the work of the 2013 Jerome Ceramic Artist Project Grants recipients, Michael Arnold, Karen McPherson, and Ginny Sims.
Michael Arnold is a maker of wood-fired, wheel-thrown pottery. He used his Jerome award to develop a new slip-cast body of work made primarily from native-Minnesota clay. In addition, he spent his grant year designing and building a wood-fire kiln, in which he intended to fire his new body of work. In addition to making pots, Arnold is NCC’s exhibitions manager.

Karen McPherson continues to create handbuilt vessels for plants. With her award, she looked beyond the usual relationship between plants and ceramics—flowers in a vase—and instead, incorporated plant forms onto the surface of the work itself. In addition to her studio work, McPherson works as Northern Clay Center’s sales gallery and event manager.

After recently receiving her MFA from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities, Ginny Sims has been teaching ceramics at different centers and schools throughout the Midwest. She used her Jerome award to transfer decorative motifs onto majolica-based surfaces, placed in an installation setting.
