Mythology Meets Archetype

MARCH 14 – APRIL 27, 2014
Main Gallery

Opening Reception: Friday, March 14, 6 – 8 pm

Mythology Meets Archetype was curated by Heather Nameth Bren, an NCC exhibition committee member, professor, and ceramic artist. Featuring the artworks of Christie Brown (London, UK), Michelle Erickson (Yorktown, VA), Kelly Rathbone (Portland, OR), Bonnie Marie Smith (Kingston, NY), and Vipoo Srivilasa (Melbourne, AU), this exhibition responded to personal, cultural, and religious myths that have grown out of the desire to know (or the posture to know) the unknowable. Symbols of the god figure, the mother figure, the self, and the demon have been used to describe ancient and contemporary narratives. This archetypal cast of characters were employed as agents of one’s personal or cultural identity, spiritual devotion, and even power to control the masses.

Vipoo Srivilasa was in residence at NCC, beginning March 7, for a series of school and community-based workshops that will explore the City of Lakes’ rich mix of communities and a particular population’s childhood or culturally significant, mythical water creatures.  Participants created their own water creatures, which became part of Srivilasa’s larger exhibition installation.

There was a free slide lecture and discussion, with the artist, Vipoo Srivilasa; Mythology’s curator, Heather Nameth Bren; and participating artist, Bonnie Marie Smith.  Thursday, March 13, 6:30 pm.
