Stuart Gair has a background and BAS in history from Ohio University, Athens, and received his MFA in ceramics from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 2017. Gair was a 2017-2018 Harvard Ceramic Studio artist-in-residence, a summer resident at the Archie Bray Foundation, Montana, and an artist-in-residence at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, Maine. Gair’s background in history informs and frames his practice, lending him an awareness of ceramic trends contemporary, ancient, and in between. His forms and surfaces are inspired by architecture, masonry, and the colors and textures of natural geology in his everyday surroundings. Though his work emphasizes functionality, Gair is equally concerned with creating complex surfaces: his pots are minimalist in shape with uniquely colorful atmospheric exteriors, referencing both retro and modern aesthetics.
