Iris has pursued a passion for studio art from a young age. She grew up on an organic vegetable CSA farm in Wisconsin, where she was constantly inspired to create by her love of nature. Her connection to the land translated directly into her academic life through the pursuit of a BA in sociology and anthropology at Carleton College. During her senior comprehensive project, she analyzed the relationship between nature and culture while challenging contemporary attitudes in the United States with an exploration of Indigenous Latin American environmental relationships. Throughout her time at Carleton, she balanced her reading and writing-intensive curriculum with the creative exploration of various art forms. She was initially drawn to relief printmaking and oil painting, but discovered a true passion for functional pottery during her senior year. Working with clay allowed her to rediscover her long-held love of nature, while inspiring her to study the intersection between art and anthropology. When her efforts are not focused in the ceramics world, she enjoys other art forms, all things outdoors, and cooking elaborate meals for friends and family.
