Zoe Filzer

Zoe Filzer Bio

Originally from New Jersey, Zoe Filzer has spent the last decade navigating an unconventional creative path across the Midwest. After detours through beauty school and community college, she earned a BFA in Integrated Studio Arts before completing a post-baccalaureate in ceramics. These varied experiences have shaped a practice that embraces experimentation, persistence, and curiosity. Working in both functional and sculptural forms, Zoe’s practice is rooted in the topic of mental health. Through clay, she explores the emotional landscapes of anxiety, depression, and self-reflection, often drawing from historical psychiatric practices, architectural ornamentation, and the repetitive nature of handbuilding. Her work invites viewers to engage with difficult subjects through objects that are visually compelling and materially rich. Zoe uses clay to facilitate conversations about resilience, empathy, and the feelings that many experience but often do not discuss.
