Nicolle LaMere is interested in the transcendent capabilities of art to subvert the conceptual delineation of culture and nature. By interlacing herself with the land and the traditions formed there, she aims to strengthen bonds between humans and non-human entities through open dialogue and engagement with the arts. Throughout her research, she utilizes Ecofeminism as a conceptual framework to reweave the dualities of gender and land relations in pursuit of equity and climate justice. Within her practice, clay, as a geological material, being of the land itself, is transformed into tenuous, paper-thin forms. Her work further re-contextualizes the vessel as a conceptual and material framework for engaging in the idea of the void, not as emptiness but as a space of unlimited potential.
“Respect for natural spaces, developing understanding through empathy, and working to create a safe and nurturing environment are my life’s missions. How I intend to achieve these ideals is through the creation of artwork and engagement with communities.”
