Mary Green strives to create wheel-thrown and handbuilt pottery that feels good in the hand and brings joy to everyday life. The current expression of her pots are experiments in colored terra sigillata brushwork and mono printing on a dark stoneware, often dipped in a terra sigillata to finish. The color palette and designs are inspired by the natural beauty of Lake Superior and time spent on the north and south shores.
For Green, the routine of making brings centering and the challenges within the many steps of the ceramic process, provide personal growth and a life filled with learning and discovery. Sharing her work creates community and Green says that “Happiness is marking a pot with an intentional gesture using my own hand, a special brush, or even a random fingerprint—leaving a hint of the maker for those who ultimately use it.” It is gratifying for Green to think of the people connected with her through her pots and the intimate acts of daily sustenance.
